Philosophy of Teaching:

Prepare, prepare, prepare. Over-prepare in terms of quantity and quality so that the curriculum can be tailored on the spot to the particular group of students. Be prepared to be flexible enough to shift focus to meet their needs.

Personal attention to individual students is imperative. E-mail messages are replied to as quickly as possible. Phone calls and visits are encouraged.

If a student is having problems, make an active effort to contact them and find out how to help.

Maximal use of truly helpful, graphically effective, well designed or drawn visual aids and demonstrations. Slides should change as often as needed to optimally illustrate points being made.

Live demonstrations of drawing in both studio and non-studio classes in art and design.

Always be in class early and stay until the last student has left.

Keep abreast of pedagogic issues and attend workshops designed to improve teaching skills whenever possible, and work to learn and apply them.

Keep it fun and allow students to have fun, but direct the flow of discourse into serious, meaningful learning experiences.

Teaching, research and writing are not mutually exclusive and while time is limited, the goal is to craft a career in which each complements and strengthens the other.
