| something to wear! | |
| allen remembers watching his grandmother make flower lei at her dining room table. she told him that when you place a lei around someone's neck, you don't just give them the lei, you give them your aloha, your love. gram took only an hour to weave her flower lei; it took a good month to complete the feather lei in the picture. if you make it yourself or buy it, obtaining a lei requires effort and time on your part and that, gram said, is aloha. whether it's made of pua (flowers), hua (seeds), or hulu (feathers) - lei should be treated with respect and dignity. while lei pua (flower lei) quickly fade, our lei hua (seed lei) keep your love forever. kukui (candlenut) and manele (soapberry) are indigenous to hawai`i. |
