Chinese California Gold Rush Monetary Stamps

This is a set of 130, extremely rare California Gold Rush Chinese monetary document stamps.

This is a set of 130, extremely rare California Gold Rush Chinese monetary document stamps. Very few complete sets are known to exist. These stamps were used to legalize all CHinese paper documents during the Gold Rush. They were issued by the Chinese emperor. The stamps gave representative of the emperor the power to make all paper items legal. Documents with these stamps were seen as legal in both California and China. The stamps are made of pear wood and date between 1750 and 1830. They were collected by an antiques dealer in San Andreas, CA in the late 1930/1940s. They were appraised between $10,000 and $12,000. They are contained in a wooden box of which the bottom is 90% original, and the top is a later addition. Displayed with this listing are pictures of the box, the 130 stamps, and the images of the Chinese characters on paper.
