as early as 1774, the nguyen dynasty emperor, vu vuong, decreed that women and men must wear ao dai everyday. it wasn't until the french occupation of vietnam that áo dài became contoured to the body to show more form. as áo dài fashion developed, certain colors became associated with different meanings. as in chinese culture, red is an auspicious color and usually worn for special occasions. black áo dài were worn as a symbol of wisdom. green represents vitality and hope. | ![]() | |
